Tips For Preventing Loneliness & Social Isolation In Seniors

Though people of any age can feel lonely on occasion, older adults are at a significantly higher risk. Read on to discover a handful of ways to prevent loneliness and isolation in retirement-age adult

People, in general, are more likely to be living alone if they are over 70 years of age. Unfortunately, occasionally, along with that comes loneliness. The spread of the coronavirus did nothing to dispel people's loneliness. Health risks are, unfortunately, presented by both of these. But there are ways to maintain your social connections and still protect yourself from COVID-19.

To prevent loneliness and isolation, despite social distancing needs for certain individuals, it's important to stay connected. Fortunately, there are many ways of doing so. Your grandchildren probably have a computer, so participate in a video call. Parks are once again offering exercise classes. You can distance yourself while still enjoying the company of others. Even indoors, with masks, vaccinations, and a bit of distance, you can enjoy hobbies like arts and crafts or music with others.

The important thing is that you reach out if you're experiencing loneliness. Who knows, feelings of desolation and loneliness may be just what others are feeling as well. Reaching out to them and connecting is the best move you can make.

Online Communities Abound Today

There are Scrabble games available, gardening clubs, cooking classes, and more on the Internet. There are communities you can belong to that offer numerous opportunities for socialization at a safe distance. You can even have a pleasant conversation with someone halfway across the globe!

Learn About, and Utilize, Today's Technology

Today's technology offers numerous opportunities for socialization, but it can also be a lot of fun. Learn to use the latest gadgets and appliances brought to you courtesy of modern technology. Do you have an iPad? Smartphone? It might be time for some shopping!

Practice Sensible Engagement

Make sure, while you're getting back out into the world, that you do it safely. Particularly if you have a compromised immune system, take all the precautions you need to stay healthy. If you're going to be exerting yourself while getting together with friends (think golf, bowling, tai chi, aerobics, etc.), keep your physical limitations in mind.

Get Motivated

Some people need a little motivation to get going. If you feel lonely, that should certainly be motivation enough! Chances are, there is more than one person in your immediate area who feels the same way. You might be able to find each other and step back into socialization together. If you don't feel comfortable meeting in person, video chat – or old-fashioned phone calls – can suffice for now.

If You're Lonely, Admit It – Then Do Something About It!

Okay, it's time to come to terms with any feelings of loneliness – even if they are slight. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Don't feel silly or uncomfortable and don't dismiss those feelings. Realizing that you feel lonely will be the first step toward actually taking action and doing something about it. Plan a movie night with friends. Create a book club. Go to one of those social events your community is scheduling, but you've been avoiding. Dance a little bit. You may be surprised at how good getting out and reconnecting with people feels. Don't be a hermit!
